A controversial 500-ton cement factory in Mon State’s Kyaikmayaw Township has not sought permission from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in order to generate power, according to the ministry.

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) has confiscated farmlands and homes belonging to villagers in the eastern Shan State township of Mong Pawk.

According to local sources, UWSA battalion 468, which is based in Mong Pawk, began seizing lands since early July in order to make way for a new town development.

“In an ethnic Lahu village named Jadawkhar, families from 32 households were evicted. Their lands were also seized, and they were forced to sign over their land [to the Wa army],” said local resident Aik Nub......Read more

 

More than 100,000 acres of land permitted to some 270 private companies for business activities in Irrawaddy Division’s Maubin District remain inactive more than 20 years after confiscation.

Maubin District was hit the hardest by land confiscation in Irrawaddy Division, particularly in the 1990s, when the military regime grabbed hundreds of thousands of acres in Maubin, Nyaungdon, Pantanaw and Danubyu townships before leasing it out to large companies and private businessmen.........Read more

 

Over 2,000 people gathered in Mon State’s capital on July 21 to protest a coal-fired cement plant.

Local residents have been objecting to the Kyaikmaraw township factory’s use of coal since last year. However, the US$400 million Mawlamyine Cement Limited factory opened in June despite the locals’ concerns that pollution could cause public health and environmental problems.

The factory uses 40-megawatts from a coal-fired power plant and nine-megawatts produced from a waste heat generator.........Read more
